Thrifting. . . the next generation

For a long time there my kids were filled with dread every time I mentioned the words op shop, thrifting or second hand. When they were of an age where staying home alone wasn’t an option, they had to go wherever I went and we all know I love a thrifting adventure. So it’s true that on many an occasion my children would sink down low in their seats and pray that no one they knew would see them parked outside these second hand establishments.

Then one day my eldest daughter started to change her dress style. . . we’d been through the hippie and boho stages and now the ‘Princess’ prefers an edgy indie look. She’s rocking anything retro and vintage, so is a convert to thrifting . . . albeit only clothing!

Then a strange thing happened during these summer school holidays . . . Miss Aimee, the baby of the house grew up. Of course that didn’t just happen over night she is 14 after all, but some subtle changes were occurring. A new maturity blossomed . . . she was dressing differently . . . she put away some of her childhood treasures and was apparently desperate for a bedroom make-over.

Then I noticed she was keen to come thrifting with me and was not only happy to carry what previously had been considered ‘dirty junk’ but was also picking out ‘treasure’. She even found a new appreciation for my favourite TV show, American Pickers. Oh how my heart swelled with pride . . . its true!! I’m so happy that my children ‘get it’. . . that they love all that is old and finally enjoy the thrill of thrifting.

So I had a new thrifting buddy for the school holidays, but as it turns out, while I was busy seeking shabby vintage finds, it was something completely different that enchanted Miss Aimee. She totally has an eye and appreciation for industrial chic. . . metal, manufacturing equipment, typography and recycled industrial elements. Who would have thought?

So this past weekend we made a start on her bedroom make-over. I’m happy for her to give her room her own unique style. . . although I draw the line at exposed bricks!!

Gone is the sweet beach theme. . .

. . . replaced now with a monochromatic black/white colour scheme with accents in her favourite colour. . . orange (ewww, but that’s her favourite colour).

To add a little femininity and ‘chic’ to the look I painted this on the wall over her bed. It’s not quite finished yet but you get the idea. I think this is a little more grown up – what do you think?

Now the fun part begins . . . choosing new bed linen and finding all those unique industrial elements to make the room her own.

I guess that means we’ll be thrifting quite a lot!!!
