Have you seen that show on TV - American Pickers?
This hugely successful reality show follows Mike and Frank as they travel around the U.S. scrounging and hunting down antiques and collectibles for their business Antique Archeology. These guys are a thrifting inspiration as they dive into countless piles of grimy junk, scour the country for hidden gems in junkyards, basements, garages and barns. My kind of guys!!
I want to be a picker!! Well you know what. . . I suspect I am a picker. . an Australian picker and let me tell you, I don’t mind getting down and dirty and scrounging through junk piles. I say the junkier the better!!
So I guess it’s not surprising that the morning following the airing of American Pickers on TV, my thrifting buddy and I set off for a day of scrounging with hearts a pumping. . . you know it’s the thrill of the find that gets the adrenaline going!! We had with us Miss M, Miss L and *Grandma*. . . their names have been changed to protect their identities.
So if Miss Meli and I are Frank and Mike then *Grandma* is definitely our at home girl Danielle. Have you seen Danielle? She has this amazing full chest tattoo. . . hmm, I wonder if *Grandma* has any interest in getting some ink!
Anyhoo’s, our Thursday thrifting adventures took us further a field than it normally does and we scored some great junk treasure. There was one moment when *Grandma* and I both eagerly made a beeline towards a crafty corner when entering a new shop. . . whoooa, I’m telling you *Grandma* was keen. With full respect for her age (obviously why we call her Grandma) I let her go first. . . but this woman is a thrifting Queen able to sniff out a bargain. *Grandma* if you are reading this, the gloves are off. . . it’s now every picker for themselves!!! [giggle]
I thrifted some real bargains. . . Miss Meli did some very impressive wheeling and dealing. . . and I managed to completely fill the back of her big car!!
In amongst my haul was old furniture, books, napery, metal ware and even an old typewriter. . .
. . . but the real gems weren’t truly realised until I began stripping back some furniture today.
My heart has missed a few beats this morning and excitement is the motivation to keep on sanding and stripping (furniture that is, not me personally). I’m filthy dirty, exhausted and so excited I was about to tinkle my panties if I didn’t tell someone. Sooooo. . . consider yourselves told!!
I’ll be back next week with some up-cycled, repurposed and renovated treasures to show you all. I don’t think I will even bother sleeping this weekend – there’s simply too much fun to be had.
