Teen Bedroom Make-over

As our children grow up we go through many stages. . . watching them develop from beautiful babies, to toddlers then school age children.

Then we hit those scary teenage years and before you now it. . . they’ve become an adult.

And so it was for us last year, our first born daughter affectionately known as ‘The Princess’ turned 18 and became an adult.

Jessica completed her HSC and secondary schooling in November and by mid December had packed up and moved away for university. . . a whole 600 kilometres away!!

Before Jess moved away we booked in for a family portrait sitting with the very talented Kylie at Childish Photography. We knew that our lives were entering a new phase. . . our children were starting to make their own way in the world and our family dynamic was sadly changing.

While this mamma was lamenting and shedding a few tears, something else was going on behind the scenes.

The younger daughter seized her opportunity and was in the process of swapping bedrooms. Yep, apparently ‘The Princesses’ front of house bedroom was considered the prime bedroom location and Miss Aimee was not only moving in. . . she had all the decorating planned too!

Within days the ‘beachy’ blue and white room had been completely transformed from this. . .

. . .to this.

Aimee knew exactly what she wanted in her black and white bedroom and I’m pleased to say this make-over cost very little.

We started by ripping out the old carpet that was earmarked for replacing anyway.

All walls were painted a bright white before we began work on the black and white floor. Initially I planned to paint the timber floor, but a quick visit to Bunnings revealed some checkerboard vinyl tiles. The entire floor cost $150. I have to admit that I was a bit sceptical about using the vinyl tiles, but they were so easy to lay and Aimee did most of it herself. We live in a year round warm climate so there’s no need to have warmth on the floor and these are better for an asthmatic too.

Next we primed and painted Aimee’s chrome bed with black gloss spray paint. . . for less than $20 the bed has a completely different look.

The bedding with its orange accents were from Aimee’s old room, as was the white furniture.

Aimee wanted a blackboard (chalkboard) wall behind her desk. . . I wasn’t sure I could live with an entire black wall, so we agreed on painting the centre third with chalkboard paint.

All that’s left to do now is find a few pretty decor items and decide on some new artwork for above her bed. Aimee is pretty keen for some bright pop art Andy Warhol style mounted posters, which I think will be perfect.

Now that Miss Aimee is enjoying her new room, I have the pleasure of decorating the other bedroom which will be ‘The Princesses’ bedroom when she visits and a guest room when needed. I think you can probably guess what style I’ll choose for that room. . . . let me just say, “it will be fit for a Princess”

I’m sharing Aimee’s bedroom make-over at this week’s link parties and with these friends: French Country Cottage, The Vintage Farmhouse, 36th Avenue, Clean and Scentsible, Live Laugh Rowe, The DIY Dreamer, Transformation Thursday, At The Picket Fence, Be Inspired Friday at Common Ground, Nifty Thrifty Sunday.
