Hi, it's Natasha Burns here, of www.natashaburns.blogspot.com
I'm so honoured that Kerryanne is letting me in on the action here on her blog, taking part in “Simply Christmas”!
I'd like to share with you a little tip on Christmas decorating that I have worked out over the years that helps keep me sane!
Those who know me, and know my home, or have seen my blog in past Christmases, would know that I don't really know the meaning of minimal. I'd love to do the minimal thing, but I get attached to ornaments or interesting decorations, and remember the stories or sentiments that belong with each. So what to do when you have too many ornaments...
Group them!
Our entrance side table houses anything “Santa”. Santa Babushka dolls my mother gave me, a Santa candle my Aunty gave me, a Santa pull toy my mother gave my son on his first Christmas, little handmade wooden peg Santa’s from my son's school fete, a Santa made by a friend's mother who is no longer with us.... do you get the idea....I remember where everything came from. So if I group them all on this little table, even though it is quite a hodge podge of things, there's the recurring theme that ties them together.
The same goes for ornaments on trees. With my ever changing taste in ornaments, something had to change. That something was to group all the white/clear/silver ornaments on our main tree in the family room, and take the coloured ones, vintage shiny ornaments or individual OOAK little ones I buy each year to another tree in our bedroom window. My son has his own little tree with ornaments made only by him.
While it's not a solution to hoarding or an answer to minimal decorating, grouping can at least give less of a suffocating feeling than just having “stuff” everywhere. It's a little easier on the eye. Well, that's what I tell myself, at least!
