I’m participating in Cloth Paper Scissors Virtual Open Studio Tour today, so come on in…
Welcome to the Woodberry Designs Studio
It’s a little over 12 months since we moved to our little cottage by the sea, so this studio is still quite new. I’ve given you mini tours of the studio before when it was first built, but I’ve moved things around a few times since to improve the effectiveness of the work areas. Today I thought I would share with you how I set the mood for creativity.
I firmly believe that being creative is not just making or doing something, it’s how you live your life. You need to find ways to allow yourself to think creatively and live creatively. For me, creative inspiration comes via my five senses: sound, smell, sight, touch and taste; so these were very important aspects of setting up my studio.
Sound - A water fountain and wind chimes outside my studio brings a soothing quality and sets the atmosphere for relaxing.
I also rely on music to set the mood of the studio. Listening to music increases your thought frequency, bringing you even higher to the place where creativity runs freely.
Smell - I use candles, essential oils and incense to scent my studio. I love the ambiance of candles and have found that certain essential oils awaken the mind and boost creativity; peppermint being one of my favourites.
Touch – When I’m working I like to wear comfortable and practical clothing. Working predominantly with paint does have its pitfalls!! I always put on my apron when I prepare to work. That’s just always been my ‘thing’. I wear it even when working on non messy activities as it puts me in my creative head space and says ‘time for work’.
Sight – I surround myself with beautiful and inspiring things. I’ve designed well over 200 original designs over the years and my studio houses all the originals, plus my personal collection of artwork... every available bit of wall space is covered in art. I’ve been working on new Christmas pattern designs for the past few months, so the shelves closest to my work desk house the latest designs – I don’t think I could ever get sick of looking at Christmas.
You can see more designs here.
And lastly, taste – we have a beverage bar set up in the classroom for my students and everyone loves this jar that sits beside the kettle. Mmmm… it’s very tempting!!
So, that’s what inspires my creativity in the Woodberry Designs Studio. Thanks for taking a tour of my workspace.
