Vintage ‘babes’

For the last few days I’ve been working on a new painting. I needed a break from my current project so side-stepped into this one for a change. I know… I hear those of you waiting for the new pattern release yelling “NOOOOOOOO”, but really, it was only a short break. I’m back to my everyday stuff now.

Sooooo…. this was my inspiration – an old 1930’s beach photo. Don’t you just love the bathing caps? Not sure we’d like to wear such modest swimsuits these days with the very unflattering mid thigh leg length but probably quite daring in their day.

Anyhoo, I used this photo as an inspiration jumpstart for a large 900 x 600 mm canvas. I wanted to paint something fun and playful and it had to remain neutral to fit the decorating theme.

I started by sketching in 3 figures. Next step I added some texture to the background.

The next day when the texture paste was dry, I painted the canvas background in a warm white and added the skin colouring.

Next came some detailed painting and mixed media elements.

I used a black watercolour pencil for some of the outline detail, stamping, and flowers cut from vintage paper for a 3D effect. A starfish finishes it off nicely.

The neutral colour scheme goes perfectly in the white beach themed room.
